Tips For Updating Your Bathroom into a Tranquil Space
Your bathroom is the most tranquil and private place for relaxation. If you can’t relate the concept of tranquility or relaxation to your bathroom, then clearly there is a lot of room for improvement in your bathroom. But either way, I’m sure you will agree that the bathroom is where you can spend some time alone, without disturbance from your partner or the kids. This is why it is important to turn your bathroom into a space where you can find some alone time and do some R & R (Read & Relax!).
If you live in a condo and have a small bathroom, it is still possible to make it inviting.
The biggest piece of furniture in any bathroom is the vanity, so it is important to get it right. It should be of a style that goes with the rest of the feel of your home. If you have a Victorian home, then getting a modern stainless vanity may not be the way to go, unless it goes with the overall decor of your home. The vanity will make a big difference to how your bathroom will look and you will probably have to live with it at least for a number of years.
There are plenty of options available when you are choosing parts for your bathroom vanity. There are traditional or contemporary styles. There are various material available, but a wooden vanity would probably be the most common. Having said this, there are also a variety of wood to choose from with different colors and different finises.
When picking out countertops, choose something durable. Think about how you usually put on the countertop. If you put a hot hair dryer on the surface on occasion, then it would be a good idea to get something that is heat resistant. Most will work with hot air appliances, but some materials stain from the heat easier than others.
The sink should be durable. Materials for the sink present somewhat of a trade-off. While materials such as stone are unlikely to crack or chip, they stain easier than some materials and you may not be able to easily repair it, in which case, it may be costly to replace it altogether. Porcelain, though it cracks and chips more easily, is commonly used because it is cheaper and easier to repair.
The cabinet should be big enough to store whatever you need to store, but small enough so that it doesn’t take up the entire bathroom. Material used to make the insides of the cabinet should be easy to clean and not affected by moisture.
You’ll want some sort of mirror above the sink. In addition to being functional, mirrors add elegance. If you have a large bathroom and have sufficient storage, you may just want to get a mirror. But for those who have a smaller bathroom, a thin inset cabinet behind the mirror can increase storage space in your bathroom which is otherwise lacking.
Lighting is also important to your bathroom. You don’t want blazing, harsh white light that gives you a headache. A warm yellow light that illuminates the bathroom comfortably would be a much more inviting option. You can find fixtures with lights in almost any multiple you wish. Some are softer, some less soft. The size and color of your room will help to determine what is right for you. A light on top of the mirror will give you good illumination, while lights on the side reduce shadows on your face.
Finally, the bathtub should always be a shade of white, otherwise even if it may seem trendy now, it will go out of style very quickly. Nowadays you no longer need to change the entire tub if you don’t like its color, you can simply hire a professional to re-glaze the existing tub. It will be as good as new once completed.
The tiles on the wall should be plain and if you like patterns, make sure they are scarce otherwise it will have a claustrophobic effect.
